When to Visit Peekaboo Slot Canyon

Morning glow, afternoon light beams or a quiet winter visit? Here's how to pick the best time for your trip to Peekaboo.

Peekaboo Slot Canyon is open to visit all year, and every season brings something different. Here’s what our guides tell guests who ask when to go.

Spring and fall: the sweet spot

Mild temperatures make spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) the most comfortable seasons. The walk through Peekaboo is only about 1.5 miles round trip, so you’ll have plenty of energy left for photos.

Summer: go early or late

Summer afternoons in Kanab are hot, but the slot stays about 10 degrees cooler than the desert outside. Our 8am departure beats the heat, and the 2pm tour catches warm light reflecting off the canyon walls.

Winter: quiet and magical

Winter brings the fewest visitors and, once in a while, a dusting of snow on red rock. As one guest wrote after a snowy morning tour:

Seeing the canyon with new snow on the ground was a rare and unique experience.

Tips for any season

  • Bring your own water, even on cool days
  • Wear closed-toe shoes for the few boulder step-ups
  • Pack a light layer for the shade inside the slot
  • Leave room on your phone. You’ll take more photos than you think!

Ready to go? Our Group Peekaboo Slot Canyon tour runs Monday–Saturday in a Jeep or 4WD SUV.

See it for yourself.

Our guides drive the sand so you can enjoy the views.
