Quick tour details

Welcome to another world

White Pocket doesn’t look like anywhere else in Southern Utah.

Its twisted layers of red, white, orange, and yellow sandstone seem to fold into one another. Rounded domes rise from the desert floor. Strange patterns, ridges, and formations stretch in every direction.

Reaching White Pocket is an adventure of its own. The route travels across remote backcountry roads and long sections of deep sand that require a capable 4×4 vehicle and an experienced driver.

Your Coral Cliffs guide handles the driving, navigation, and changing trail conditions. You can relax, enjoy the scenery, and save your energy for exploring one of the Southwest’s most remarkable landscapes.

This is a shared group tour with up to 12 total guests. It is our most affordable way to experience White Pocket with an experienced local guide.

What you’ll experience

  1. The journey into the backcountry

Leave the pavement behind and travel deep into the Vermilion Cliffs backcountry in an off-road SUV or capable 4×4 van.

The changing landscape and remote desert roads are part of the experience. Your guide will handle the deep sand, route-finding, and trail conditions along the way.

  2. White Pocket

Explore a landscape filled with colorful sandstone, unusual textures, sweeping curves, and formations that seem almost unreal.

Unlike a single viewpoint or short roadside stop, White Pocket offers room to wander, explore, and continually discover something new.

  3. Time to explore

You’ll have time to walk across the sandstone, take photographs, enjoy the views, and experience the landscape from several different perspectives.

  4. Local knowledge

Your guide will help you understand the geology, human history, and natural forces that shaped the area. They’ll also help you find some of White Pocket’s most memorable features and photo locations.

  5. A true full-day adventure

At approximately 7–8 hours, this is more than a quick sightseeing tour. It is a full-day journey into one of the most remote and remarkable parts of the Southwest.

Remote—without making it complicated

White Pocket is far from the pavement, cell service, and crowds. That remoteness is one of the things that makes it so special.

It can also make the destination difficult to reach without the proper vehicle, equipment, route knowledge, and backcountry experience.

Our guides know the roads, the deep-sand sections, and the changing conditions. We take care of the complicated parts so you can experience the remote beauty of White Pocket without worrying about navigation or getting stuck.

You get the feeling of a true expedition while we handle the logistics.

How difficult is the exploring?

White Pocket does not have a single established walking trail. Guests explore across natural sandstone, sand, and uneven desert terrain.

The day can be adjusted to the interests and abilities of the group, but guests should be comfortable:

  • Walking on uneven sandstone
  • Crossing sandy areas
  • Stepping up and down natural rock surfaces
  • Being outside in a remote desert environment
  • Entering and exiting an off-road vehicle throughout the day

There is no technical climbing, but this tour is more physically involved than a paved sightseeing experience.

Do we drive on this tour?

No. Your Coral Cliffs guide handles all of the off-road driving and navigation.

How long is the tour?

Group White Pocket is approximately 7–8 hours. Road and weather conditions can affect the exact return time, so we recommend avoiding tightly scheduled plans immediately after the tour.

How many people will be on the tour?

Group White Pocket may include up to 12 total guests. Depending on the day’s bookings and vehicle assignments, the group may travel in one or more vehicles.

How difficult is the walking?

There is no technical climbing, but White Pocket is a natural backcountry environment without paved paths.

Guests should be comfortable walking across sandstone, sand, and uneven terrain. Your guide can help the group choose an appropriate pace and route.

Is White Pocket the same as The Wave?

No. White Pocket and The Wave are separate destinations within the greater Vermilion Cliffs region.

White Pocket is known for its large area of colorful, swirling sandstone and the freedom visitors have to explore the landscape. The Wave is a specific formation located within Coyote Buttes North and requires a separate permit.

Can we drive to White Pocket ourselves?

The route includes remote roads, confusing intersections, and long sections of deep sand. Drivers need a properly equipped 4×4 vehicle, off-road experience, recovery equipment, and reliable route knowledge.

A guided tour removes the driving, navigation, and vehicle-recovery concerns so you can focus on the destination.

What should we bring?

Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy, closed-toe shoes suitable for walking across sandstone and sand.

Bring sun protection, a camera or phone, any required medication, and clothing appropriate for the expected weather. White Pocket is remote, so come prepared for a full day away from town.

Cell service is limited or unavailable throughout much of the route and at White Pocket.

Will we have time to take photos?

Yes. White Pocket is an extraordinary photography destination, and the tour includes time to explore and photograph the landscape.

Can we book White Pocket privately?
